SAHODAR Nepal
Nepal has a history of slavery and it is only in the last generation or two that this has ceased to be common practice. Many of the descendants of slaves today remain trapped with a legacy of no self-respect. "A dog could enter his master's house. A slave could not! Once a slave, always a slave," was the background in which they grew up. This attitude largely continues today in the more rural areas, such as in and around the community of Garambesi.
Thanks to the work of SAHODAR in Nepal, such attitudes are changing. Local people are slowly being empowered to break free from the past.
SAHODAR was born out of the vision of four brothers, Tuk, Chanman, Shiva and Bhim, all former slaves. They were given the rare opportunity to have an education, which has lead to their current positions of influence within and beyond the immediate community. Shiva was the first former slave to qualify as a medical doctor in all of Nepal. They all have wonderful testimonies of their coming through suffering to find faith in Christ Jesus which now drives them on to help the community in which they grew up. Rather than seek their own desires, they are committed to bringing salvation and development to the struggling community in which they grew up. In 2002 they initiated SAHODAR, since when the organization has gained official charitable status, local and national government recognition, and is very highly regarded within the wide geographical area.
