While Liza and Simon were in Nepal, they were able to find out about an exciting new project that has been proposed, which will enable the SAHODAR Hospital to become self sustaining in the future, as well as providing employment for local people.
SAHODAR Nepal already own a piece of land, presently unused, that would be suitable for growing lemons and ginger. Lemons are great because the local monkey population don't like their sour taste! There is also a market for them. To enable this to happen, the land will need to be fenced off and prepared. In addition, a small dwelling will be built for the caretaker who would live there. If this project can be started in the New Year, then the ground should be prepared at just the right time for planting 1000 trees in the summer. The trees will take 3 years to produce their first crop, but in the meantime, ginger planted around the trees will produce a cash crop more quickly. Funds have already been donated for the first stage, which is amazing. The cost of the lemon trees will still need covering. 1000 trees at £10 each would provide the £10,000 needed for this. Would anyone like to sponsor a lemon tree?
